As of late...

The deadline for the (preferred starts)Ore to Shore mtn bike epic in Traverse City, Mi is looming. Its one of the greatest races in the midwest. Rocky, dry, hot, long, upper body punishment. My money this year is on Doug. No pressure for doug, but he's never one this one. Came close many times, but has had some hard luck.

I finally found and bought a mtn bike. A 29er gary fisher Superfly. Went to the river bottoms with Cam(also on her maiden mtn bike voyage) on wednasday. Fun times. The 29er has some strengths, and maybe a couple weaknesses. Im sure I will find out more this sunday in Eau Claire. www.wors.org

St Cloud crit was ok. Went to hard too early in the 35+ race. Didnt have much left for the last few laps. 20th or so. DNF'd in the 1/2  Just past half way...and then i bailed out. Wondering if i should double up at Northfield or not...?

I need to sell my Bontrager Carbon tubular wheelset. Good condition. email me: mattmuyres@hotmail.com

Northfield this saturday!

The Great Alexandria Bike Race

I barely knew this was on the calendar. Wasnt an A race really. Didnt know anything about it. A few loose emails within teammates, I got the impression a few would show up, and a few would stay behind. Something about a bachelor party for Aric. Synergy ended up with 5 in a field of 13 total..for the 1/2.

In fact, there was a total of like 36 racers for ALL categories. The schedule for the weekend started off with a 84 mile road race on saturday, and a TT and circuit on sunday.

Synergy had Joe Lewis, Chad Christenson, Stick Lavick, Adam Hanson and myself. An early attack from Adam, Mark Brone, and Rick Laliberte left them off the front for about 3.5 laps. The course had an inner loop of 16m(x4) and a 10 mile out and back. With some power from an unknown racer from Utah, the 3 man group was caught with about 30m to go. Adam and Mark couldnt latch onto the group and dropped back as we passed. Another group formed with Joe Lewis, Brian Dahl and ? just after the catch. So these 3 were away for maybe about 15m or so when again, 3 guys in the pack chased hard to bring it back. The 3 that worked all weekend were the guy form Utah, a strong cat 3 GP guy(Nicholas Vetter) and Josh Roeser(penn cycle).

After they were caught, I made a hard push off the front and had a small gap. Lavick told me to just keep on goin. I had maybe 30sec on the now scattered group. I was in the homestretch with about 5m to go. I was out of water and I had cramps forming. Not good. I was caught. We were now a group of 6. Chad and Rick dropped off, and Adam and Rick were a little ways behind too. A good sprint from Joe gave him the win, followed by GP and Great Plains(Dahl)

An 8 mile tt sunday morning shuffled the leader-board a bit. The Utah guy, Josh and the GP dude all were top 3 in the TT. This bumped Joe down to 4th. Joe and lavick were without Tt bikes. Headwind out, a nice tailwind back.   The rain came for the Circuit race. We decided on 6 laps. Adam again made an early effort and got away. Mark Brone bridged up and they were together for maybe 3 laps. Joe made a mid race solo attack and was able to eventually bridge to Adam and Mark. Those 3 worked hard to the finish eating up all the time bonuses. Time splits were delivered from Matt Anderson. Joe won the overall by one second! Sort of pure luck in that we didnt know how things were playing out exactly.

A fun weekend in Viking country. We stayed at the Viking Motel.

Amateur racing...PRO watching...

This past weekend was the Nature Valley Grand Prix pro stage race. They have 2 opportunities to have amateur races(category 2 and 3). Mankato had a 50 min crit race and Stillwater had a 10 lap crit race. Both were different.

Mankato: 3 teammates toed the line. Adam Hanson, Joe Lewis and myself. Flanders had numbers and a few unknowns to keep an eye on. Things were going well when about half way 2 guys slipped off the front and stayed away. We hammered hard near the end but to no avail. I flatted again with 2 to go. Hit a big crack in the pavement.  DNF

Stillwater: With Chillkoot Hill, anything can happen. The group was together for the whole way with a few being shelled every lap. It was about 10 guys to the finish. I tailed off with 2 to go and came in at 11. A great course. I could never shift to my small ring very well and lost valuable time on the hill just about every time. ugh A bit choppy and potholey in places, but just had to keep a solid line. The crowd was awesome. Thanks for cheering!

During this time, I was able to spend some time with Camilla Schmitz. She is a local amateur racer who races for Flanders. They brought an 8 person team to the womens field at the NVGP. As a roommate for the past few months, I was able to see Cam prepare both mentally and physically for this big 'A' race. She is undeniably one friend that I can 'easily' say can do anything when she puts her mind to it. I was able to witness food, race and bike preparation diligence with precision, while maintaining self-control. Her results during the 5 day race is testament to her professionalism away from the bike. A class act of a person and very happy to know her! (climbing in red)

Racing

The season is underway. I felt better at the last St. Fair Crit. Tried to be near the front more. Mulrooney was third. Joe Lewis s back from CO. Looking strong. Will be a big factor in upcoming races.

There was no crazy antics at the pro mens TT on Ohio street this year. I wasnt in the mood and Jwood couldnt make it up the hill.

Watched the St paul crit. Good racing. Will watch the uptown pro crit(s) tonight and then get ready for the mankato amateur crit saturday and stillwater crit sunday. I like both. See if i can bring home some moolah...!

Keep Hope Alive!

High Fructose Corn Syrup...II

I saw the movie FRESH last night. Headed over to a packed Riverview Theater with Camilla. Birchwood Cafe has been promoting it on Facebook for quite a while. It takes a look how and why we grow our food the way we do and the consequences that are stemming from it. As in the book by Michael Pollan's The Omnivores Dilemma, Joel Salatin is the spotlight subject in FRESH. He is a farmer in Virginia. But his methods of raising cattle, chickens, broilers, etc..is all based on how he grows grass. He 'rotates' his animals from paddock to paddock every day. A natural cycle that a massive monoculture feedlot just cannot do. His food is healthy and he hasnt used herbicides or pesticides in decades.

Anyhow, a bigger food movie, FOOD INC is coming out in a couple weeks.
