Mos Eisley Spaceport. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.
I was looking forward to this years Cheq. My fitness level was above par. My motivation was high since I had only done a handful of mtn bike races so far. I was really anxious to ride the Superfly on this roadie course, letting the 29er momentum thrust me into and over the rollers.
I finally had a place to stay the night before. I cant remember when I stayed up the in area the night before. It has always been a drive up on race day. So, thank you Barry Tungseth and his wife for letting me crash in their family cabin off of double OO in Seeley.
Pre-race meal was salmon, long grain rice and idaho potatoes. I was feeling good and stayed positive when I hit the bed. The force can have a powerful influence on the weak-minded.
Race morning consisted of getting to Hayward early enough to find a nice parking spot, grab a green tea, and get the bike prepped up and mentally motivated. Things were taking shape. I had a good warmup too.
RACE:
A safe rollout kept everybody bunched together. I entered Rosies field about 80th it seemed. But this is the way I race now-adays. I cant start fast like the top 30 guys do. I would bonk and burn badly. So, my strategy is to work my up through the field during the race. To do my thing and understand my strengths and weaknesses.
This worked well. The Birkie section was what it was. Some tough sections, some fast sections. I was with Anakin, Wenk and Dave Meyer for a while. The 29er was doing well. Well, some of the best freighter pilots can be found here. But watch your step. This place can be a little rough.
Firetower Hill seemed easier than other years. Being dry and seeing a good line, made for a steady and safe climb. I hauled butt down the hill for the remaining 10 miles. Caught a couple guys I think.
I got a bottle hand up from Dave Z. Thanks! Its always nice to get water during the race. Otherwise, I had plenty of food, gu and liquids. I didnt eat even half of what I brought with me. Always happens.
This year I went without a computer, CO2 and tube. I thought the conditions were safe enough to go without.
I almost caught Timmer at the finish. Great job to Camilla for getting second in the womens division for the Short n Fat!
So this was my best Cheq race. Felt good overall. Never bonked. Paced myself well. About 10 minutes faster than my best time. 29er was solid. Its for sale now.
Firetower hill.
